Is using a VPN a secure way to access your CCTV system?

Previously, it used to be that security cameras were only being used by businesses and offices. However, they have become so common, and nearly every home that can afford one has security cameras installed. Not only are they easy to install, but the live footage from the cameras can also be accessed from anywhere in the world.

Accessing CCTV footage over the internet is not without its risks because CCTV systems can be hacked leaving you vulnerable to the theft of footage, invasion of privacy, and having your security cameras disarmed. You can access your CCTV footage easily on your PC or mobile device and any operating system, however, using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is one of the safest methods you can use.

Here’s are some reasons why:

1. Safe connection and login

You can create a safe tunnel between your internet router and your device. The tunnel connects both ends and serves as a secure channel of communication for sending and receiving video and image data. With the VPN, you will need to complete an authentication process consisting of an ID, password, and sometimes a key before gaining access to the surveillance system.

2. Complex work for hackers

With a VPN, it is obviously much harder for cybercriminals to gain access to your surveillance system. Other methods of securing your surveillance system online like P2P or port forwarding may be less secure and vulnerable to some attacks while the use of a VPN to connect your security cameras is harder to compromise.

3. High level firewall protection

A VPN encrypts your online traffic and protects your data from Internet Service Providers, Surveillance Agencies, and Hackers whenever you are online. Routers usually have basic hardware firewalls which enable secure access to your cameras. A firewall and a protective router help to ensure that no unauthorized connection can be made to access your cameras.

4. Direct access

When it comes to monitoring and connecting to a CCTV system, using a VPN is much more direct than other methods and it can be set up and maintained by the Users themselves.

So, the answer is yes. Using a VPN is a secure way to access your CCTV system online. It makes it harder for hackers to access your surveillance system, it offers firewall protection and it is not difficult to set up. For a more secure connection, consider using a virtual private network.
