The Convergence of Security and Building Automation Systems

Building automation is getting more popular as people seek out easier ways for building maintenance, fast fault detection, and stress-free ways of carrying out everyday activities. The adoption of building automation systems has increased over the years mostly in luxury homes because they provide all these functionalities and more.

Building automation systems (BAS) are electrical control systems that are used for the control of indoor and outdoor lighting, fire alarms, and security cameras in addition to heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and all other electrical components within the building.

How do building automation systems and security converge?

In a typical commercial office building, it is possible to find a setup whereby security functions like fire alarms, access control, and video surveillance are run over a dedicated network, while others like the lighting system are run on a different network. These separations in systems tend to increase and require different points of control panels and staff presence because they are not integrated. This method of having separate systems is not the most cost-effective, efficient, or convenient way. Integrating all these systems leads to the convergence of security and building automation systems which is the more efficient way to run a building, and this is done by converging on a single local area network.

Security is seen in terms of the protection of lives and property, and building automation contributes to achieving this very aim.

Here are some of the devices that can be categorized as both building automation devices, and security devices

Fire alarms

Fire alarms are used for the early detection of smoke and fire so that occupants of a building can be quickly evacuated from the premises and firefighters can be alerted to put out the fire before it causes more damage

Security cameras

Security cameras are used for property surveillance and can be set up to alert security personnel when there’s trespassing. Some security cameras also have object identification and tracking enabled to aid the effort of apprehending criminals and preventing possible safety hazards.

Smart locks

With smart locks, you can be rid of keys completely because you can simply lock and unlock your door using your smartphone. These smart locks can communicate with your phone through Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi and grant you access to them from anywhere.
If you enable the feature, some smart locks unlock automatically when your phone is detected and lock again when your phone is out of range, thereby granting you the convenience of not having to worry about locked doors.

Security cameras are essential for surveillance in a building automation system, hence the need for properly installed cameras at the right locations.
